    do you think it would be possible to extend the length of the lens even further to have it fit into the peep hole of a front door? My building no longer allows ring type of door bells, was thinking of doing this to the wyze cam and use the peep hole.

  • @mikethinks
    @mikethinks Рік тому

    I replaced mine with a fisheye lens...the issue was the fisheye was too big to fit through the existing hole, and there's a PCB there, so you can really make it bigger. The surprisingly easy (albeit destructive solution) is to clip off all the plastic screw guide pegs so I could move the secondary board (the one with the hole) close enough to the sensor that I could screw the fisheye from the outside. Once done, I just connected all the leads back up, pushed all the innards back in the case and a little silicone around the lens (once focused) and around the outside bezel thing to get it water tight again. The way the innards SNAP into place, the screws are not really needed. Works great and I have a super wide FOV now.

    Thanks for the video, I do appreciate the insight overall. However, I'm confused, at 5:31 you go through the effort to remove the lens mount from the upper PCB board (and exposing the CMOS/sensor in the process) but to remove the lens you just pulled it out? Is the lens glued into the hole in the lower board or not? If it isn't couldn't you just pull and lightly twist (wiggle) the whole board until the lens comes out of the hole? I cringe at thought of people exposing their CMOS sensor like that. (And always use an air bulb/squeezy like a Rocket Air to blow off exposed components, never rub!!!)

    • @DalsVzla
      @DalsVzla 2 роки тому

      Thanks I really appreciate your feedback. Nothing bad exposing the CMOS but that’s a choice… I’ve had that discussion with some friends and there are mix feelings lol. Never had an issue doing it with specially with a $30 camera. Lol. Regarding pulling out the lens, it isn’t glued to the lower board and only to it base, and yes you can just pull and lightly twist it without un mounting from the board however, it is much more easy to grasp and twist the way I do, otherwise you could break the board, Again, nothing wrong exposing these cheap sensors but that is just my opinion. Thanks again. Regards.

    • @BHush-yh7ww

      The Lens may have 150 degrees at 2.8mm, but the sensor has less area than the lens covers. So sensor has the 130 degrees with that lens

      You could, however, it will be more easy removing the whole piece to unscrew the lense because it is glued from factory.

    Excellent video. I've upgraded the lens on several v.2 cams, but have yet to do a v.3 model. So far, I've installed 8 mm, 16 mm, and 25 mm lenses. Love the telephoto aspect of the 16 and 25 mm lenses, but focusing is touchy. Now to do a v.3 :)

      For less than you could pay someone, just do what I did. I needed to refocus my lens for a close-up bird cam. I bought a spare to work with in case I messed it up. It really was not that difficult or delicate, and the refocus went perfectly. You won't get anyone to crack open yours for less than the cost of a second "just in case" camera. You can do this!!

    There's no need to expose the sensor to unscrew the lens, I don't need to switch lens right now but If ever I was to give it a go, I'd start by twisting the lens straight from the front, even if it mean destroying the glass in front. Actually I might epoxy the lens onto something a way to grip it. Don't waste 40min to reduce risk of breaking a 30$ camera.

    I wish my old hands and eyes could still do that. Slightly different subject, but related to your video, Do you know if there are any metering sensors in the area around the lense, or is all of the light metering done TTL? I am going to paint one and don't need the Night Vision or IR. I am not willing to take it apart before I paint it to discover it.

    I swapped lenses today following this walkthrough and learned a few things. Removing the lens required me to blast it for a few seconds with a hair drier, as this guide suggests. I broke the orange ring trying to pry off the glued frame despite the warning. Not a big deal. Before disconnecting the wires I took a picture of how everything was plugged in which turned out to be a great idea and I kept referring back to the photo during reassembly. I also had already activated the camera before the operation so I didn’t need to worry about scanning the QR code. Hard to do if you are installing a non-focused lens. I wanted to keep the night vision capabilities so I bought a 12mm lens with an IR filter thinking I needed that. DO NOT buy a lens with an IR filter. Turns out with the IR filter on the lens the night vision doesn’t work very well. This is because the Wyze Cam mechanically slips its own IR filter in and out behind the lens mount depending on the mode. So a lens with an IR filter already on it means there are now two IR filters in night mode which basically thwarts the night vision. The original lens doesn’t have an IR filter on it (because one gets dynamically inserted at the board). The IR filter on the lens I bought was just a thin sheet of glass glued onto the back end and I was able to pry off the IR glass (cracking it the process) with a box cutter blade and night vision worked like a charm, just as normal “day” vision did. I was concerned that the longer lens would let too little light into the camera but this seems to not be the case. Low light conditions are not any worse with this new lens as far as I can tell. When you focus your lens it helps to use a larger screen like on an iPad. And pinch/zoom in on something with detail. The 12mm lens sticks out past the front of the casing which means I was able to adjust the focus without disassembling everything again. This also means it’s easy to knock the camera out of focus too. Not sure how this affects water resistance but that isn’t a concern for me. I decided to remove the rubber ring that surrounds the lens so I could swap back the original 2.8mm lens or an 8mm lens without having to take everything apart again. This of course removes any water resistance. To find lenses on eBay or Amazon besides the one recommended in the comments search for “M12 1.2/5 8mm” (for an 8mm lens) or other focal lengths like 6mm, 8mm, 12mm, etc. 6mm I think gives you about 2x zoom from the original 2.8mm lens. 12mm seems like 4x-5x. You can also get wider angle lenses all the way to fisheye by searching for mm lower than 2.8. I know that with binoculars and telescopes the larger the magnification the less light is collected (without a wider opening) so I would guess that’s the case with the Wyze Cam. But the Wyze Cam auto adjust the light level but might (just a guess) add noise.

  • @Hellefleur

    Thanks for the video! I tried replacing the stock lens with a 2.8-12mm lens an Amazon review said fit, and it did not fit. The mounting screw is the same size but there's no way to add the bigger lens since the diameter is larger than the hole in the plastic and PCB. But following this video I was able to take apart and put it back together just fine.

    Oh, there is the A/B comparison I just asked about. Thanks! Looks like a good choice in this instance. Some cameras, like the Wyze doorbell, should have more fisheye to better see the side to side. This would remove possible hiding spots.
